About Us
Welcome to MLI at Cottonwood Creek Elementary. Each day our students recieve
instruction based on the Orton-Gillingham-Stillman approach. We teach a comprehensive, integrated language arts program addressing reading decoding and comprehension, spelling and composition, cursive handwriting, and alphabet and dictionary skills. Reading and spelling materials are presentation in a series of seven kits.
The ungraded curriculum encompasses the structure and science of the English language. Students typically require a multi-year commitment with the goal being to complete the curriculum as long as the students are progressing according to criterion-referenced "Mastery Checks" administered periodically. Mastery of all reading and spelling objectives and skills enables students to read and spell 85% of the most frequently used words in the English Language.
Each class contains a variation of the following:
Alphabet/Dictionary Activity: Variation of modality for each day for reference materials. Gain quick reference to location of letters in relationship to each other.
Reading Decks: Name letter then key word/sound. Each letter introduced through multisensory technique will be added for daily review.
Spelling Decks: Sound to symbol deck. Variation of review of this deck; daily review of every sound.
Multisensory Introduction/Review of New Letter or Concept: Use of multisensory "linkages" to teach all properties of a letter/group of letters (i.e. digraph ng--2 letters=1 sound).
Reading Practice: Daily practice of decoding of words in lists, syllable division, context practice, and fluency.
Spelling Practice: Daily practice of the encoding of words including phonetic spellings, situation spellings, and word spelling formulas.
Review of day's new letter or concept: Closing activities. Accountability of day's involvement in the dyselxia class.
Handwriting Practice: Extra attention and practice are given to cursive letter shapes for accuracy, fluency, and later to proportion.
Rite Flight : A Classroom Comprehension and Reading Rate Programs.
